Boring, boring and more boring.

When I think of the Midwest, I imagine sun-burned farmers, hard-working farm wives and their strong, healthy children busily helping with chores when not in school. In her book, Johanneck gave me an entirely different view of the Midwest, particularly Minneapolis and neighboring towns. In Johanneck's words, "It has been touched by every type of vice known anywhere", and her accounts of the shenanigans and atrocities in Minneapolis' past are both titillating and shocking. This book is certainly not light reading, but thought-provoking and memorable.

The author obviously knows the subject like nobody else does. The empire run by Minneapolis gangsters stretched all the way to Florida and Las Vegas. The gangsters' involvement in racketeering, gambling, and union-busting activities, the murder of journalists, the wholesale bribing of public officials, make this era seem exotic, dangerous and downright interesting.
The writing is a bit awkward and hard to read. Otherwise good info inside...
