Take a Lesbian to Lunch—author Charlotte Fisher’s highly anticipated follow up to Mackinac Bridge Jesus—is receiving high marks from readers in and out of the LGBT community. This book a must read for anyone who’s ever felt out of place or uncomfortable in their own skin. More than an anthem for gay rights and social change, this collection of short stories challenges individuals to love themselves from the inside out, and do the same for others. Fisher calls the fresh collection of essays, set in her home state of Michigan, both heartbreaking and heartwarming. Whether she’s writing about Barbie, the devil or her gay cat Edgar, you’re sure to laugh, cry or maybe both. Diverse audiences have connected with Fisher’s writing. She believes her stories touch people regardless of age, gender, ethnicity or sexual identity because they examine real human conditions -- rejection, kindness and healing. “There are those who might see the word ‘Lesbian’ and run,” she says. “This book is not a rainbow rally. Rather, it challenges readers to shed their long-held biases—whatever they might be—and become willing to change. It is a story of awakening, releasing and forgiving.” Readers have called her first book, Mackinac Bridge Jesus, “poignant, “brave” and “roll on the floor funny.”

Take a Lesbian to Lunch eBook Charlotte Fisher Reviews
I attended a book reading for ‘Take a Lesbian to Lunch’ and was so enamored with Fisher’s story-telling ability, that I purchased her book. Don’t let the title fool you – this collection of essays is universal in its application and appeal. Fisher’s stories are simultaneously delightful, thought-provoking, tragic and amusing. Her voice is honest, witty and relatable.
Fisher is not a lesbian writer, but rather, a writer who happens to be a lesbian. It is through this lens of feeling like an “other” than Fisher shares her journey. Fisher takes us on a tour of her life, weaving large moments with smaller moments, sharing her keen observations and gleaning meaning from all her moments equally. We learn from Fisher that the “ah ha” moments often come at surprising and unsolicited times, if we are only open to receiving them.
There are additional “other” categories that Fisher identifies for herself, including ‘Conservative’ and ‘Recovering Alcoholic’, sharing her thoughts and feelings refreshingly unapologetically. My favorite essay, if I were to pick just one, would have to be the title essay, ‘Take a Lesbian to Lunch.’ In this essay Fisher proposes a simple but world-changing notion of finding the “others” in each of our lives-whether that is by race, religion, sexual orientation or whatever-and rather than making assumptions about who they are, inviting them to lunch. Spend an hour asking questions and listening to the story of the person across the table from you. Fisher guarantees that at the end of that hour, you will discover that you and the “other” are more alike than different.
While some readers may choose to read this book cover-to-cover, I preferred to take my time reading individual essays with days lapsing in between. Fisher tends to jump around in time and topic, both within the essays and throughout the collection. As a result, my approach to her book left me confused as to where a specific story fit into the chronology of her life. But throughout the book, Fisher reminds me that life does not present itself in neat, contained packages and that the lessons come through connecting the dots. At one point Fisher writes, “It just feels good to finally connect with my own life.” I can echo that, it felt good for me to connect to Fisher’s life through her stories, as well.
Fabulous, witty read! Loved it
