Elizabeth Elliott has written an emotionally charged novel about forgiveness and trust and new beginnings. The characters are well written with complex personalities and the storyline is quite good also.Dante Chiavari is an Italian nobleman who has been very wronged by his uncle who murdered his parents and attempted to murder him also. Dante lives for revenge and the need to restore his family's social standing. He has been the King of England's most trusted assassin and he has been given one last job; to prevent Welsh beauty Avalene de Forshay from marrying a power hungry nobleman. Dante is to kidnap her and if that fails he could even kill her if it means preventing the wedding. Dante is a bit jaded so he expects this assignment to be accomplished quickly with little fanfare.
Avalene has been fostering with her Aunt and Uncle and she is not happy; her family does not appreciate her and her Aunt's plans for her are not ideal, so she is excited to see that her father has sent one his knights to accompany her back to her father's holding. She expects to marry the nobleman of her father's choosing but her feelings change when she sees Dante for the first time.
Dante is posing as the knight sent by her father and his first meeting with Avalene leaves him stunned; he is enchanted by her, he is utterly speechless. Avalene feels the connection and so does the reader, the author describes these opening scenes between the leads with passion and depth. Dante's plans are still to kidnap Avalene but the job is so much more enjoyable. Avalene trusts Dante implicitly and he is amazingly talented. Already Avalene finds herself wanting a future with "the landless Knight" over her father's choice. The problem is Dante is not who he claims to be and this poses a huge problem for the leads.
Dante, who has never questioned his orders, now does so and the more time he spends with Avalene the more he longs for a new beginning. He wonders how Avalene will react to his lies and worries even more about how she will respond to his violent past.
These leads have heartfelt talks which are some of the best scenes in the book. Dante really needs Avalene. Her optimism opens all kinds of emotional gates and a flood of feelings pour out of Dante. Really this story focuses on the hero and that's fine because Dante is intriguing and heroic.
Avalene is perfect for her hero. She is loyal and she shows it. The reader will admire her gutsy defense of Dante and her ingenuity too.

The Dark Knight Elizabeth Elliott 9780553575675 Books Reviews
The dark knight, it was a great read and I enjoyed reading about the historical accounts of things. Once I started to read the book I could not put down.
I liked the book but I didn't think it was as good as the first 3 books she wrote. It was a little slow moving, and not really very exciting. But it was still a good read.
Great story and love the author!
Enjoyable tale
An assassin helps a young lady escape her unhappy life. Pretending to be a noble knight, his identity is revealed, but is he as ruthless and evil as everyone thinks he is? Only the love of his captive and his love for her balance the odds against them. *****
Well, I think I waited 10 years for this book! I read the last in the series, Betrothed, read the teaser about 'The Assassin' and couldn't wait to read it. So I waited and waited and waited. Nothing happened the book never appeared but there were rumors and hints for years that Elizabeth Elliott was still writing it. So, every now and then I Googled it and eventually it looked like it really was going to be published, and here it is at long last! I bought it and was almost afraid to read it because I didn't want to be disappointed, having waited so long. It sat on my for a few days after I bought it, crazy after waiting all this time! Well, I want to say Thank You Elizabeth Elliott for persevering with this book, I loved it. I loved Dante, a truly dark hero who would stop at nothing to hold on to Avalene. I could hardly put it down, and my only criticism is that it ended too soon.
This is my favorite book of the four inter-related novels of the Montague/Remmington/Chiavari group. The central character, Dante Chiavari, is first seen as very dark and driven. Although he is the King's Assassin, he is motivated by a value system that allows him to be at peace with the killings and mayhem he inflicts at the King's direction or in furtherance of his vengeance for his parents' deaths. He is basically a good soul that has been twisted by unavoidable circumstances. You cannot help but cheer his redemption when fate brings him the affection of a woman who accepts him as he is, but whose regard he so greatly desires, that he pulls himself out into the light. Ms. Elliott has again stepped out of the formula to bring another delightful tale.
