I started off really liking this book. The beginning is strong and punchy, and establishes the main character, her motivations, and her flaws right off the bat. The writing is clever and witty, and the whole thing feels a lot like reading a paranormal version of the board game Clue — set in a castle that’s not nearly as romantic as any self-respectable castle should be.It’s a nice Whodunnit mixed with, “But what if there really is a ghost?”
Unfortunately, that’s where my high praise ends and the nitpicking begins.
I started to have misgivings the minute it became clear a certain character was definitely the I-saw-it-coming-but-hoped-it-wouldn’t Love Interest of the story. Those misgivings became contempt pretty quickly, as everything I’d enjoyed vanished and was replaced with a cliche villain, a Deus Ex Machina in lieu of a satisfying resolution, a cardboard cutout Love Interest, and quite possibly one of my least favorite gimmicks story writers pull: The Gotcha, which is the purposeful obfuscation of important story details, character motives, entire scenes, foreshadowing, etc., just so the author can whip the rug out from under the reader and triumphantly declare their victory because the reader could NEVER have guessed this twist they just pulled out of thin air! Shocker! Every clue dropped meant nothing! Every development that seemed to be happening was just a sham to confuse the reader!
I understand it’s a mystery, and surprise is a part of the mystery. (Maybe I’m an idiot.) But if the surprise involves devaluing everything that came before it, then it’s not a surprise. It’s a Gotcha.
Bonus: the main character’s personality dissolves halfway through the story as well.

Seances Are for Suckers An Eleanor Wilde Mystery Book 1 edition by Tamara Berry Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
A different story about ghost and cons, in places it is really funny and in other it's very scary and it leaves you waiting for the next book and maybe some good romance with a millionaire
Mystery, mediumship, and mayhem ensue in this Eleanor Wilde mystery. Elle goes from fake spiritualist, helping families move on, to real live ghost Hunter. the question is, how live is the ghost really?
I loved the originality and unpredictable ending of the plot and how Eleanor did her best with the lot life gave her. The characters were well developed. I didn’t want to put this book down and will definitely be reading more.
I love this book! Great characters that made me laugh outloud throughout the book. I rarely give 5 stars, so it goes without saying that this is one of my favorite books of the year. I'm looking forward to reading more in this series.
So many twists and turns....misinformation and misdirections. Still, everything came together in the end. The writing was engaging, and the editing was very professional. Did not note any spelling or punctuation errors (so very helpful!). Would highly recommend to mystery lovers. Plan to read more from this series soon.
Very enjoyable read. You are forced to jump right into the middle off Ellie's life and at times you have to play a bit of catch up but it is well worth it. Sometimes snarky Ellie, brooding stuff Nicholas, worried Liam and fidgety Rachel make you wonder how it can turn out well. Despite the tragedy and sadness is a heartwarming tale.
Eleanor Wilde is a charming heroine. A devoted sister to her comatose sister and teacher brother who all share the bond of triplets.
To make money to keep her sisters in a nice nursing home, Ellie has taught herself all the tricks of being a medium. Armed with technology, and a few tricks, she has gained a reputation and is asked to go to England to exorcise a ghost in a castle.
After lots of twists and turns, she is successful, but the reader is unclear who or why strange things keep happening.
This is a fast and fun read. Never stoops to the conventional or trite.
